Lune fait sa rentrée
by Zuzana Zelenakova

by Magdalena Rosova

Podľa NASA bude prevoz raketoplánu späť do vesmírneho strediska stáť približne 1,7 miliónov dolárov. Posádka pozostávajúca zo siedmych astronautov trikrát opustila vesmírnu loď a vymenila jedného člena! posádky vesmírnej stanice. Astronaut Tim Kopra str&!

The shuttle Discovery landed in California
by Magdalena Rosova

The space shuttle Discovery almost collided with a piece of orbital trash last Thursday. At that moment astronauts inside the shuttle were preparing for a landing in Florida. Rick Sturckow, a commander of the shuttle, together with pilot Kevin Ford fired engines of the shuttle for 14 seconds to dodge the space junk. The space trash did not endangered NASA's plan to land the shuttle at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. However, it was the bad weather condition near the center that forced it to touch down in Californian desert one day later. The shuttle landed at 8:53 at Edwards Air Force base in the Mojave Desert. Flight controllers wanted the Discovery to land at K! ennedy Space Center because it is less expensive and now it will take a week before the shuttle can be ready for next mission. According to NASA, it will costs about $1.7 million dollars to bring the shuttle back to the center. Aim of the 13-day mission to the international space station was to make repairs and deliver supplies, science gear and treadmill called Stephen Colbert, named after TV comedian. The crew consisting of 7 astronauts performed three spacewalks and replaced one member of the station's crew. Astronaut Tim Kopra spent almost two months in the space station and now was replaced by astronaut Nicole Stott. The Discovery also took a Disney toy of Buzz Lightyear, which ended his own 15-month space mission. Buzz came to the station in May 2008 as a part of an educational campaign. After his return he is planned to be welcomed as a hero at Walt Disney World in Florida. There are six more space missions remaining on the NASA schedule.

by Zuzana Zelenakova

Podľa správ NASA agentúra už do programu investovala osem miliárd dolárov a do roku 2020 investuje ešte najmenej sto miliárd. Avšak, podľa komisie vedenej Normanom Augustinom vybudovanie menšej z rakiet nie je nevyhnutné, pretože Ares V by mohol odniesť ľudí i vybavenie.

Back to the moon
by Zuzana Zelenakova

The US space agency NASA has been planning the return to the moon for quite some time. The year set for the mission should be 2020, it is partly because of plans missions to other parts of our solar system, as states NASA´s spokeswoman Lynette Madison. "What we envision is having a ... sustained U.S. presence on the moon ... being able to live off the land, to get oxygen for lunar regulators," said John Olson, a manager in NASA's Office of Safety and Mission Assurance. "We will explore to see if there's water, ice at the poles. We can use the sunlight to power our systems." The moon should become a base for voyages to other parts of our solar system. The program at f! irst set aside as too expensive got a positive reaction Tuesday on Capitol Hill. However, it will need funding of $3 billion a year. The plan was described as “fatally flawed” by Norman Augustine, head of the panel of experts appointed by the Obama administration given the current financial resources available. But many congressmen, from both parties, and even a wife of an astronaut stood for it. "I don't see the logic in scrapping what the nation has spent years and billions of dollars to develop," said House Space Subcommittee chair Gabrielle Giffords, astronaut Mark Kelly´s wife. According to the space agency´s reports it has already invested about $8 billion into the program and has yet to spend at least $100 billion by 2020. The return-to-the-moon project proposed by ex-president George W. Bush involves building two new rockets. The smaller one called Ares I for carrying people and the larger one Ares V for equipment. However, according to the com! mission led by Augustine building of the smaller rocket is not! necessa ry because Ares V could carry both people and equipment. Now the decision is in the hands of the Obama administration after they evaluate the commission´s report.

Contemplation sous un ciel nocturne
by Milota Sidorova

Homo Sapiens strikes again
by Claudia Sonea

Surprise, surprise, there are things that are beyond our comprehension! It is not abnormal to discover that some theories launched by so called experts turn out to be faulty and even untrue. They say they know when the dinosaurs lived and when they were extinct, what species inhabited the Earth in the past and how they evolved to the present moment. How much is it true I wonder. Taking into account the fact that from time to time they discover something that totally contradicts their first theory, you can be tempted to frown with doubt. Let’s take as example the rare Arakan forest turtle. The specie was believed extinct unt! il 1994 when turtles were found on the Asian food markets. You should know that there are 14 Arakan forest turtle living in conservation and breeding facilities and they said the probability for the turtles to live in the wild is very low if not impossible, yet a team of researchers from Wildlife Conservation Society discovered accidentally some specimens in the Rakhine Yoma Elephant Sanctuary. As it is, wild Arakan turtles still exist, thus proving that researchers cannot make undisputable statements and we should question everything. Moreover, the fact that the turtles are in such a critical situation, that they are about to be extinct due to human hunting should raise serious concerns. The Sumatran rhinos are believed to be extinct for half a century due to hunting. Good news for the conservationists around the world: the discovery of these turtles in a remote place increases the chances for the specie to survive as in captivity! the breeding is very difficult. Good news for poachers around! the wor ld: you can now earn a (dis)honest buck and hunt the remaining turtles. In any case, good luck to everyone and God be with the wild Arakan turles.

Homo Sapiens loveste din nou
by Claudia Sonea

Luand in considerare faptul ca, din cand in cand ei descopera ceva care contrazice total teoriile lor initiale, puteti fi tentati sa ridicati din spranceana. In orice caz, noroc pentru toata lumea si Dumnezeu sa fie cu testoasele Arakan.

Niečo pod nočnou oblohou.
by Milota Sidorova

Voči druhej významnej a najbližšej galaxii Andromede, každú sekundu prekoná vzdialenosť 75 míľ. Tá dĺ! ;žka sa už dá predstaviť. Pocítili b! y ste te da pohyb? Predstavili by ste si ho? Predtavte si to.

by Zuzana Zelenakova

Contemplations Under the Night Sky.
by Milota Sidorova

We all know that the Universe is in constant movement, however, the scale of it, is for a human being, rather unimaginable. We know about Solar System movements and we know something about life and death of stars. Theory of black hole is not completely unknown to us. It may be far from your daily deeds and movements. Let’s just sit in perfect dark and look upon the night sky. Except of romantic feelings, it’s a performance, spectacular of massive size. Did you know that every second the stars are running towards each other? Some of them crash, some die, some create in such movement. Of course, you can’t see it. The performance has different timing. But w! hen you close your eyes, you can feel the speed, the mass and the purity of natural laws, heading that enormous space. Did you know that our galaxy, known as Milky Way is flying through the space? It’s running towards the nearest big galaxy Andromeda with 75 miles per second. Don’t you feel the movement? What about Andromeda? Scientists have recently published the finding that Andromeda was cannibal like galaxy. Unlike the black hole that may be possibly eating galaxies from inside, Andromeda is pulling near stars, galaxies and space mass close to its center. Then the performance begins. The stars are crushed and torn apart. Unlike black hole, Andromeda doesn’t “eat” their bodies, it just transforms their positions. So, right now, above our heads we’re having enormous power rearranging the sky map. Wonderful! And the Milky Way is slowly taking its turn. Both galaxies are more than 2.5 million light years away. A light year is about 5.9! trillion miles. Take your time to imagine such measures. The! n, quiet ly, in deep awe, look up once again, and think about the gift of life, we’ve been given for a little while.

by Magdalena Rosova

by Claudia Sonea

Bogatie versus bunastare
by Claudia Sonea

Wealth versus welfare
by Claudia Sonea

According to a Romanian saying “the country is on fire and the old lady is brushing her hair” and is just what some researchers are doing. They have yet to discover a cure for cancer, to end world hunger, to create valid plans of beating the recession. However, none of the previously mentioned is on the researchers’ mind, as they are a lot more preoccupied with important things, like fantasising about the possibility of being at risk of losing your life due to the recession. You don’t need a special diploma to notice that stress is damaging people’s health, especially in developed countries where the! urge is to make as much money as possible, having a high profile job, even at the cost of working all day. Therefore, imagine the effect the economical downturn has on people and how much stress it causes. Yet, studies show that the mortality rate during the recession usually drops and the explanation that Stephen Bezruchka of The University of Washington School of Public Health gives seems plausible enough. If people are short on money, they will drink, smoke and eat less. Moreover, he points what was obvious enough, that money cannot bring happiness- a rich country doesn’t mean it has a better welfare. Bezruchka pleads for social distribution of wealth which is actually a utopia and doesn’t seem to be an idea a researcher would postulate. Surprisingly enough there are other studies on the same issue of death rate during recession and the justification is that the data could bring changes in the countries’ policies like making acti! ve labour-market programs. In Scandinavian countries like Finl! and the rates of suicides dropped as a consequence of the good welfare programs. In fact, these studies bring nothing new into our attention. The lawmakers were already aware that better welfare programs lead to a decline of the mortality rate and that happy people work better, don’t think about ending their lives, and they have a better attitude when it comes to failures and hardships. This is not, however, something that could actually be of any interest to the governments of developed countries like UK. With all the worries about the resources and their exaggerated consumption, as well as the danger of overpopulation, who needs to bother about improving people’s lives? At least, you can sleep better tonight, because you could lose your job tomorrow, you might end up living on the streets, but for sure you are not at risk of dying; that is, if you are not planning to jump off a tall building or in front of a train. Enjoy surfing and stay away fr! om any sharp object that might induce sadistic thoughts.
