First humans in Europe 1.2 million years ago
by Silvia Szarkova
Europe might have been inhabited by our ancestors even earlier than it has been thought ! According to the scientist, the first humans in Europe could have appeared even 1.2 million years ago. They declared it on Wednesday proofing they statements by excavated fossils as a result of research that is being continuously done in northern Spain.A cave near Spanish city of Burgos has been hiding an archaeological treasure of jaws, teeth and primitive quarts tools. Andreu Olle, paleontologist in the co-operative group in Spain, said to scientific journal Nature, that those were the oldest human remains in Europe claiming that it must had been populated earlier that it was thought before. Olle works in Spain since 1990. To estimate the age of fossils the team achieved to work with tree separate techniques- other team usually use just one, or two- focusing on the technique of using the radioactivity to identify the age of carbon from which are human bones. Earlier excavations from 1997 showing the presence of people in Western Europe were supposed to be 800,000 years old and after that a new species Homo antecessor were named. It resembles to Neanderthals and is related to Homo sapiens, a modern human. Furthermore, these bones also have some similarities to ones dug out in 1983 in former Soviet republic of Georgia, in a place called Dmanisi. The last fact is the most shocking for the whole scientist community. What is more, a controversial theory of entering the South of European continent from Western Asia, is now more probable than it has been until Wednesday, doubting the theory of spreading of humans from Africa across the Straight of Gibraltar.
