Americo-French prize by Claudia Sonea

Well everyone heard of the Nobel Prize or at least I hope they did because it represents world recognition of one's achievements. However, I wonder how many new about the Abel Prize. It is in fact an international mathematics prize named after the Norwegian 19th-century mathematician Niels Henrik Abel and awarded annually since 2003 by the King of Norway to one or more candidates for their works. This year the award was won by John Griggs Thompson of the United States and Jacques Tits of France. Thomson, an American, is well known for the research in the field of finite groups, while Tits is a French mathematician of Belgian origin who wrote a number of works on group theory (deals with the concepts of symmetry among others) On Thursday they won $1.2 million that they will have to share. On May 20 there will take place the ceremony where the award will be given by Norway's King Harald. The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters annually chooses a committee of five international mathematicians who this year thought that their works were amazing with a profound significance. Both mathematicians have published their works separately. Abel Prize has fame similar to that of Nobel and has the role to attract attention on the mathematics, making it more appealing to people, especially to the young ones. There are others like Adams Prize, Carl Friedrich Gauss Prize, Euler Medal, etc. Good things happen to hard working people, thus we wish them good luck in their future researches.
