Unknown enthusiastic scientist
by Martina Harvanova

Al Gore's movie about global warming, generally American high comsumption, enormous pollution caused by factories, traffic as well as common world inhabitants, pilloried many interesting and shocking issues. Among others it showed how unbelievably huge the melting of glaciers is. There occurred many opinions about all the presentation and ideas of that movie, but one thing is sure. In principal subjects it told the truth. Al Gore isn't the only one to claim the range of ice melting is towering. The pictures of shrinking glaciers in Alps (Europe), Kilimanjaro (Africa) or in Papua New Guinea are familiar to many other scientists. Exactly the last mentioned place is source of preference to one of them, Lonnie Thompson, an American glaciologist, who strives for more opportunities in exploring this situation. The name of project he is to work on is connected with Puncak Jaya, spot in this tropical island. The importance of Puncak Jaya lies in fact that there are still great ice tongues present. As the El Nino's droughts affect this part of the world, Thompson believes his research will reveal much of the history and possible future of world climate. There are just few scientists who are so enthusiastic about the subject. Which of them would be keen on a journey to such a distance area not even visited by tribes? Who would be able to undergo the risk of such capricious and extremely dangerous region? I know there are some devotees who are fond of discoveries, but anyways... Many of us fight for environmental issues. Some of us prefer the way of entertainment and propagation of the subject like Al Gore does. Some of us take different direction and are able to take the risk on themselves. Lonnie Thompson is one of these that we can be thankful to. His actions aren't popular or seen world-wide. However, in the future they will get admittedly priceless. It' s a pity, he isn't as famous. Fortunately, his discoveries were awarded with National Medal of Science. Least ways.
