When the protests don't follow a right way
by Martina Harvanova

The protests of youth against various unfairnesses have seemed to be effective so far. In the last century, young people struggled against using weapons, environmental pollution, starting a war and other similar issues. In most cases their actions were deemed very beneficial and helpful in people's zeal to improve our living conditions. However, this tendency is sometimes heading somewhere else. Indeed it is fighting against anything. The most recent example can be seen in the port city of Italy, Naples. The domestic youth has unleashed stirs based on the problem with trash dump. At first, they protested against the action of the local representatives to create a new dump due to shortage of space in the old ones. One may say, that's correct, they just don't want to pollute their city and are anxious about it. On the other side, the issue became more evident as the trash has started to cause serious damage to the local environment. Collectors stopped picking up the trash more than three weeks ago and as a result the mountain of it increased to a stinking spot on outskirts and even in historical center of Naples. The situation doesn't look like it is going to be tackled easily. Conflicts between police and still fighting youth are growing rapidly. Both Italian Premier Prodi and President Napolitano coincide in the opinion the issue isn't a fringe one anymore and it is to be solved once and for all. Although everybody agrees the conditions are unbearable, the final solution is going to be tough for all its participants. Nobody dares for a concession. The so often emphasized freedom and the right to oppose sometimes change to unbelievable situations. Italy can act a an example of it and Naples, moreover, as an example of misunderstanding of democracy. Because a needed condition for embracing and maintaining of democracy is the mutual finding of solutions.
