Discovering Stonehenge
by Claudia Sonea

The National Geographic Society financed a research regarding the most famous prehistoric sites in the world, Stonehenge, that will be presented on Sunday on National Geographic Channel and also in its magazine, in the June edition. Mainly it will reinforce the theory of a burial site, although many people like Mike Pitts, editor of the journal British Archaeology. England’s prehistoric monument located in the county of Wiltshire is a mystery for researchers and for many years there were controversies whether it was indeed a burial monument at the beginning or not. The new team conducted by said Mike Parker Pearson, archaeology professor at the University of Sheffield in England, found bones and teeth as old as 3030-2880 B.C, around the time the monument was being built. Also there were found the remains of homes near Durrington Walls and a circle of wooden pillars which was pointed to the midwinter sunrise, in opposition with Stonehenge that is to the midsummer sunrise. It is necessary to mention that the researcher dated for the first time the bones with radiocarbon. No other investigation on Stonehenge did that, thus the credibility rises. If until now they believed the burial ceremonies lasted for only a century, the Stonehenge Riverside Archaeological Project revealed that they were wrong and the ceremonies lasted for about 500 years. Moreover, the small number of people being buried there at the beginning makes them believe it was destined to people of high importance, perhaps leaders. In absence of clear evidence, I prefer not to say anything. It is true that they still have many things to discover and then put together the pieces before we could say that the mystery is solved. Stay connected, something new is just around the click…
