Chris Cantell Discusses Science: The Holmes comet is still visible to all eyes concerned by Corina Ciubotaru

A comet is visible in the night sky in America. You can see it even without binoculars but its details come to life when you wear some, not to mention the show being put on by a telescope. According to specialists, it's a once in a lifetime event and it happens because the comet got very near to the sun and exploded, forming a bubble of gas. Its icy core has evaporated due to the Sun's heat and what we see now is exactly that bubble, as shiny now as the Big Dipper. The vapors of water, mixed with some ethane, acetylene and hydrogen cyanide are surrounded by space dust which reflects sunlight and gives the comet this beautiful glow. The show could go on for weeks or even months as Comet Holmes became bigger than even Jupiter in the night sky and is seen as a spot of light without the usual tail associated with such a celestial body. It got its name from Edwin Holmes who discovered it in 1892 after another burst around the Sun, like the one on October 23rd. It orbits the Sun every seven years and it is currently at a distance of 2.5 times the distance between the Sun and the Earth. And even though its miraculous appearance and emergence has puzzled scientists for hundreds of years, it has only produced such a spectacular burst 115 years ago. They are now determined to find out as much as they can about it before it vanishes.
