A new vision for unemployment
by Lenka Filipova

Many people who lost their job recently do not have to tremble. A new feasible opportunity is gaining ground. In the middle of the most preferable American's regions producing wind energy is searching new skilled workforce. As the very most popular concern of the world is to safe our planet and eliminate the environmental dangers there is a need for so-called "green-collar" jobs. The potential for this kind of job is rising markedly.TPI Composites Inc. is planning to built new plants within these regions that required wind energy. It aims to provide America with cleaner future, thus it will create new job opportunities too. These will include ethanol production, production of wind turbines, solar panels, and of course, the positions reliable for supporting and maintenance. As the original goal was to move the workforce from the Maytag-type to future favorable jobs, there is necessity to provide new employees with proper and accurate training. However, the old employees who are about to retire are afraid that they are no more trumpet-call for the new industries. Majority of people reckon that only young people would be required as they mean a profit and perspective for the future. In addition to this, the base payment is significantly low to the one people had before.TPI stipulated to make more than 500 jobs and Unions see the opportunity to reinstate more than 3 million jobs to people who lost it in seven recent years. In spite of the rise in job possibilities and vivid improvement in wind and solar investment and production, there is an apprehension that the lack of skilled workers will hinder the overall future growth.

Most beautiful, most dangerous
by Zuzana Valkova

Lots of small children want to be an astronaut. But there is only few who really get the chance to fly to the space. It's the biggest adventure of life. To see our Earth form the space and for a few days be weightless. But on the other side it is one of the most dangerous adventures. Space ships are still not as safe as they should be. Constructers are doing their best, but they still have some problems.Astronauts must be very brave and they have to think quickly and clearly. These people are special trained to be able to serve, pilot or command the spacecraft. But last few years, there were lots of people who just paid huge money to get to the space. They were ordinary people, just millionaires who wanted to try it. But still these space tourists must have company of well trainer and prepared people behind them. They are half of the success.Other half is airplane. Or we can call it aircraft or spaceship. There are many names, but they must have something in common. Safety! Every single spacecraft must be in the best condition; everything must be fixed, checked, at least twice. That's why the last flight has delay two months. They want it to be perfect and as safe as it can be.Last disaster of the aircraft was in the year 2003, when during the re-entry the plane exploded and all seven astronauts died. After this tragedy was the program of space shuttle stopped, but now it's again prepared to work perfectly.

Chris Cantell Discusses Science: The dark energy around the Universe
by Claudia Sonea

The Universe is a great mystery and therefore there is nothing out of ordinary to try to find an explanation to how it appeared and why it is expanding. The Bible speaks about the process of Creation, while physicians speak about the Big Bang phenomenon (the Universe created as a result of an explosion). According to a study released on Wednesday by the British weekly science journal Nature astrophysicists believe to be on the verge of discovering why the expansion of the Universe, triggered by the Big Bang, is accelerating. Two very different theories converged and gave birth to the conclusion that the mutual attraction of galaxies through gravity would slow the expansion of space, created by the Big Bang some 14 billion years ago. One says that the Universe is filled with so-called dark energy, a substance that has never been seen. Still, this dark energy cannot be detected with the help of technology as it neither emits nor reflects light or radiation, but it counteracts the gravitational attraction that galaxies exert on each other and which would otherwise break the cosmic expansion. On the other hand, the second theory says that the dark energy does not exist and thus current theories about gravitational force as the prime force in the Universe would be wrong. None of the theories has been supported by observations or proves. Until now, observations have not strongly supported either scenario. An international team of 51 astronomers led by Luigi Guzzo of the Astronomico di Brera in Merate, Italy measured the distribution and movement of some 10,000 galaxies over a period of 30 years by using the European Space Agency's (ESO) Very Large Telescopes (VLS) and with the purpose to study the overall expansion of the Universe, which pushes galaxies away from each other, and the force of gravity, which pulls them together. They were able to create a 3-D map of an expanding Universe that also informs about movements within the galaxies themselves. Oliver Le Fevre, from the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille confesses that it would offer a way to test the nature of dark energy. The scientists scanned thousands of galaxies across a patch of sky roughly 20 full moons across and concluded in favor of a dark energy that accelerates the Universe's expansion. Guzzo stated that it would help them to take a decision regarding the dark energy and if there is need to change some of the physics law. Don't go away, more to come!

The volcano in Ecuador explodes
by Lenka Filipova

Ecuador's Tungurahua volcano fired off wreaths of ash 6 miles into the air on Wednesday as the Geographic Institute proclaimed. 3,000 villagers living closely to volcano's slope were ordered to be evacuated. Luckily, no victims were found or reported. The director of Civil Defense, Roberto Rodriguez informed that more than 1,000 dwellers eloped from the western slant early in the morning. Some of the families that were not aware of the magnitude of the danger refused to leave due to fear form larceny. It was reported by the President Rafael Correa that all possible safety precautions were taken. He added that within this area the necessity of state of emergency will be prolonged to 60 days. The warning of the experts at the Geophysics Institute rose informing that the volcano's activity is going to continue with no sign of fade. If Tungurahua volcano were to compare to similar situation in the past, the specialists would liken to robust eruptions in 2006 causing the death of four people and living thousands of people without home. Tungurahua has been active for 9 years. It seems that the volcano got into new eruptive cycle. It does not showing any deceleration. The mostly influenced areas included western acclivities, especially the communities of Bilbao, Cusua, Chacauro, and Puela. Fortunately, the closest famous destination Banos is not in danger. The word "Tungurahua" in the local aboriginal Quichua language means "throat for fire". Ash flushing form the volcano has covered wide extended area, ruining possessions, soil, equity, and brute.

Chris Cantell Discusses Science: Three, Two, One!
by Kamila Moravcikova

Well, the U.S. space shuttle called Atlantis finally lifted off and is right there where it belongs, high above, in skies, in open space and its crew can easily watch the planet Earth. Being in space is not only the evidence of the intelligence (and in my humble opinion, also the demonstration of having enough guts) of human beings, when it comes to this flight to cosmos, there's much more going on. Atlantis didn't take off and travel to space only because of pure joy of being "in heaven", it also should have brought the European science laboratory to the International Space Station (ISS). And I think it's fine when finally the cosmos is not the place to show who rules this world as we all know something about an effort and battle to be first in this or that and to prove who is better. Isn't it nice when you see that humans are able to collaborate? Even though I have no idea what's story is behind all of that and how much has this co-operation cost. Anyway, the European equipment is in space. And so do some international astronauts. And all I can do is to admire them. I would never board such a vehicle, never, I swear! And it's not only because of that "humorous" nick NASA has, where the notion NASA stands for "Need Another Seven Astronauts". †Nothing like that. Flying is just a nightmare for me. I'm still wondering how could I survive all those flights I went through in my life?! The secret is...I usually get drunk a little bit. And, honestly, have you ever seen drunken astronaut?

Columbus on Board
by Jana Passova

The shuttle called Atlantis finally got into the orbit on Thursday after two months delay. A special European gift was for the international space station on the board. The gift is Columbus- science lab for 2 billion dollars. Atlantis with its crew of 7 people left their seaside launch pad at 2:45 p.m. The shuttle overcame problems that it had with fuel. Nobody could be happier than 300 people on the launch that had come to see how Columbus leaves the Earth. Tears of happiness could be seen there on some faces. The Europeans celebrated with grape juice and chocolate made in Belgium and France. It took 23 years to finish Columbus. The lab had to survive redesigns, slowdowns, or two shuttle accidents. The start wasn't threatened by tornadoes that went across the south part of the USA in the beginning of the week. Because of the bad weather start of the shuttle was in danger. At least tornadoes stayed far away from the place of start. At the launch time the sky was cloudy but weather was without rain or thunderstorms. In space Columbus will join the laboratory of the United States called Destiny. A very similar action is planned for the Japanese lab Hope in the beginning of March. It will not be so easy. Hope is much bigger and that's why it needs 3 shuttle flights to get off the Earth. NASA Administrator believes that no launch could be better remembered than the Columbus one. †It is because Columbus will bring to the space station international capability and participation. On the board of the shuttle is a new space station resident, French Air Force Gen. Leopold Eyharts as well. He will replace an astronaut from NASA Daniel Tani, who will end a fourth-month mission and return to Earth.

Sci-Fi
by Claudia Sonea

Breaking news about a new generation of 3-D technology that provides realistic, updatable holograms in nearly real time, unveiled by scientists in the United States on Wednesday. This could mean much for the movie industry (3-D holographic movies that makes the viewers to feel like their inside), for the military commanders (a three-dimensional picture of a battlefield), medicine (complex micro-surgery inside a patient) and for a several other domains. The new technology is described in the British journal Nature, by Nasser Peyghambarian of the University of Arizona and colleagues who reported they recorded images on a palm-sized screen measuring just 10X10 centimeters. It creates holograms (been used previously in advertising, art and entertainment as static displays) by shining 3 lasers: one on an object, whose image falls on a photosensitive screen, while the second falls on the screen, creating condensed contours of the object, which are imbedded in the film and the third laser, called the reading beam, directed onto the screen will resurrect interference pattern. As in a Sci-Fi movie the 3 lasers creates an image in three dimensions that appears in mid-air behind the screen. Nevertheless that one day a 3-D motion picture will become a reality. Peyghambarian's team were able to update the image in about three minutes and hold it there for up to three hours based on the films called photorefractive polymers which contain molecules of dye that respond to light and rotate and line up in response to an applied electrical field. The 3D effect is viewable within a given angle by a person in front of the screen; a slight move could lead to the loss of the effect. Joseph Perry of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, stated for Nature, that the technology is promising, but there is need of higher-powered lasers and more sensitive photorefractive polymers ushered in larger and faster 3-D displays. Don't get your hopes up yet, there is more probably for competition from flat-panel 3D screens and other rivals to take the lead and bring something innovative, before this technology takes shape. However, hopes die last! Enjoy.

3D with holographic displays
by Barbora Misakova

Imagine you are in the cinema, sitting in your chair, eating popcorn and drinking cola, you know just enjoying some movie. †And suddenly the biggest shark you have ever seen is swimming towards you. You can clearly see him as you were just swimming in the ocean, you can see his little black eyes, those big sharp teeth and this big, meat-eating fish is still closer and closer to you. Now it is so close you can even touch it! In a short second it is opening its big mouth and swallowing you! Don't worry you are still alive, only scientist of the University of Arizona have nothing better to do than scary you to death by their new 3D technology which will maybe somewhere in the future enable watching movies without those funny spectacles. Of course this incredible technology would be used on better purposes not only having fun. First of all it could be very useful for military purpose when it could make a three-dimensional picture of a battlefield and it could be handy also for surgeon who could use it to see inside a patient and easier detects the tumor or some sludge. How all this technology works? Well the truth is this wonder is only 10 centimeters by 10 centimeters measuring screen. Scientists from University of Arizona created holograms by laser which was shining on an object and its image falls on this photosensitive screen and then the beam of another laser falls on this screen and creates condensed contours of the object. In easier way they just recorded, displayed and updated some images of object on this little screen. And it is not the end. For those who know what I am talking about and are able to imagine it, there will be also a third laser called reading beam, which will be directed onto the screen and its function will be to resurrect this "interference pattern" created by two previous lasers into an image in three dimensions. I know for us, girls it is quite complicated, but imagine that incredible experience you got from 3D movie with Jonny Depp or Jake Gyllenhaal.

The mini-pterosaur was found
by Jana Passova

Scientists have a new find about pterodactyls. They have known that it was small, toothless and had a curved toe. But they did not know how small could be the smallest member of this group. There was discovered a sparrow sized creature which lived on a tree and this showed an interesting side of history of pterodactyls. The mini-pterosaur had a wingspan only about 10 inches which is 25 centimeters. Pterodactyls spent most of time of their lives on tree. This was enabled by the curved toe. Scientists suppose pterodactyls eaten insects because of the lack of teeth. Pterodactyl is the best known dinosaur from all giant examples of the ancient reptiles which were able to fly. The new fossil type was found in the western part of China's Liaoning province. It was named Nemicolopterus crypticus. It lived in this forested region nearly 120 million years ago. This pterosaur lived inside of the continent. It is the smallest member of the group of flying animals. First scientists thought it was just a baby. But later they found out that all the bones of the body were developed. There is no idea how big these animals could be at the adult age. This is new information for scientists which is opening a new side of the evolutionary history of those creatures. Scientists are happy also because of the fact that to find fossils of these animals is really hard. It is caused with the fact they were able to fly. There have been found some smaller specimens before but these were much younger than Nemicolopterus crypticus. The small creature might provide knowledge about the evolution of more massive pterosaurs which came later.

Can the planting patterns influence the weather?
by Lenka Filipova

Yes, it might seem that the question is the wrong way about, but in fact it is not! Recent studies at South Dakota State University founded by NASA is dallying with the issue whether regional weather behavior and the probability of wildfires could be in some way affected by the shifts in the planting.Men of science at the Geographic Information Science Centre of Excellence decided to make an experiment in regions with high potential of such effects. South and North Dakota, Nebraska, western Minnesota ant northern Iowa will be included in the research. According to Geoff Henebry, an SDSU professor and senior scientist at above mentioned Centre, there are jolly factors affecting the seasonal cycle of whatever exchanges like water and energy. He said that as you changed the land surfaces, you changed the characteristics of the seasonality of the vegetation growth and water use and the brightness. It was explained that the investigation was not aimed to foretell exactly the changes. It is rather done to make clear and sagacious surmises to prevent potential disasters or other dangerous consequences.Within the study very important matter is involved, that is switchgrass used for bio-fuels. It is expected to be largely grown in the future, bringing, however the increased potential of wildfires. It is mainly a significant problem for the regions growing various dried-out grasses and prevailing winds. As these grasses are really flammable, the farms are running the risk of conflagration.Senior scientist Michael Wimberly said that this research could lead to development of practices debarring the disasters and what is more it might help to foresee the eventual hazards.

Chris Cantell Discusses Science: Global Warming
by Daniela Simkova

When people started to use all the products of the modern world, they did not think about the ruining of our world. Climate changes are a product of the modern life and thus they affect the world nature and it also has a royalty on our health system. Society now started some research how to protect our world, but it is still just in progress. German, British and U.S. scientists are saying in their report that: "Society may be lulled into a false sense of security by smooth projections of global change." They also wrote that: "Tipping elements in the tropics, the boreal zone, and west Antarctica are surrounded by large uncertainty." They connected it to the vision of more serious potential shifts than we could imagine. One of the climate shifts or a "tipping element" could be a rainforest, which is drying from the top of the trees. There is a big risk that the rainforest will dry out completely. These "tipping elements" are unfortunately close enough to start doing some serious arrangements. Timothy Lenton, a lead author working at the University of East Anglia in England said: "Many of these tipping points could be closer than we thought."There are several more studies concerned about the changes, which are caused by the Global warming. For instance there is a study concerned about the disappearance of Arctic sea ice during the summer. This problem may also occur in couple of decades.

China surgeon turns cataract skills to cat's eyes
by Zuzana Krskova

A year old South China tiger from Nanchang Zoo in the eastern province of Jiangxi, Xinhua had the cataracts removed last week.A top eye surgeon at a hospital affiliated to Nanchang University has been entrusted by Zoo managers with operation. "I removed cataracts from thousands of humans, but it was the first time I have operated on a tiger." said surgeon Liu Fei. "Cats have a third eyelid and their anatomy is quite different from humans."The male cub, born through artificial insemination, is one of the country's two surviving South China tigers.Tiger cub often ran into walls and fences and could only sniff for food, so Zoo workers had suspicion, that is unable to see. In December, as a result of inbreeding, he was diagnosed with congenital cataracts in both eyes.Almost all the 72 tigers bred in captivity nationwide are descended from the six tigers captured in the wild in 1955, that's why are South China tiger cubs prone to congenital defects. The South China tiger is critically endangered, and the number of those tigers in the wild is fewer than 30. According to the World Wildlife Fund, it's believed my many scientists to be functionally extinct. Chinese vets and doctors have reported success in cataract operations on Siberian tigers, but have never operated on South China tiger."We were very concerned over whether the cub should be operated on at all." said Zhao. "Some Zoo workers said the species was too rare to take that risk."

The flower of love in blue
by Zuzana Zelenakova

Let's face it, red roses are bit of a cliché for an anniversary gift. If you want to be really original the Japanese company Suntory can help you with that. The thing is it created the world's first genetically modified blue roses and plans to release them to the market next year as it stated on Monday. In 2004, Suntory Ltd., which is also a major distiller and beverage manufacturer, in cooperation with Australian company Florigene (mostly owned by Suntory) managed to achieve something that had long been considered almost impossible. It took 14 years for Japanese and Australian researchers to come to the final conclusion. The team created blue roses by implanting genes for blue pigment delphinidin extracted from pansies. Roses originally lack the genes to produce it, which is why it was so difficult to produce blue ones. But now the roses contain almost 100 percent of the blue pigment. According to Suntory's spokesman Kazumasa Nishizaki, the company hopes to sell several hundred thousand of them every year. "As its price may be a bit high, we are targeting demand for luxurious cut flowers, such as for gifts," he said. Suntory has been growing the blue roses also in Australia and USA to get approval for sale there but so far there is no progress in the matter.

Alvin Drew finally appeared in Nelson's music video
by Zuzana Moravcova

When Willie Nelson, a legend of country music, set out to make video to his song "You Don't Think I'm Funny Anymore," premiering this Saturday on MTV, he named some of his celebrity friends and invited them to appear alongside him, such as Owen Wilson or Woody Harrelson, he somehow forgot to invite Alvin Drew.NASA astronaut Alvin Drew said "I do listen to Willie Nelson's music, but I wouldn't call myself a rabid fan, where I would go out and look for places to go check Willie Nelson out,", who logged 13 days in space as a mission specialist on shuttle Endeavour's August 2007 flight to the International Space Station. When his friend had invited him to join him at his running club, they met another regular, a friend of the singer.Drew explained: "So we get all done running and cleaned up, and he says, 'Hey, you want us to go over and spend some time at Willie Nelson's bar?' The friend I was with in Austin is a huge Willie Nelson fan, so he said, 'Why don't you come with us. It would be a great thing to do. We'll go over to Willie Nelson's bar and have a beer, meet Willie Nelson and then have a relaxing afternoon.'"However, when they arrived to Nelson's ranch, a problem occurred-the security would not let them in. "It turns out because they were shooting a video." continued Drew. "It turns out they needed extras for the final scene when they are giving out awards. They were looking for people to be extras, especially people with flash cameras. So, that is why I got recruited to go out there with a flash camera."At last, the many times awarded astronaut and NASA's mission specialist was just part of the general public. He did what he was told and stood in the crowd of cheering people, behind Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson."It was only after they were all done and it was a wrap, and we were sitting around in Willie Nelson's bar, that it came up," Drew said with a laugh. "I sat there and had a good long chat with Willie Nelson."Nelson proved good sense of humor, when he after this incident, said: "He thought it was pretty interesting."

Chris Cantell Discusses Science: The first European space base
by Tatiana Hadarova

Yesterday, after a struggling day-long affair was finally installed first European laboratory Columbus on the International Space Station. Columbus is the first permanent research facility in space, which "belongs" to Europe. New space lab was ferried-up to the station by shuttle Atlantis and astronauts Melvin and Tani used a robot arm to slip the "cargo" on to a station port. Astronauts said that its installation took more time than expected. Columbus is a 1.9 billion investment of 10 European countries. It is 23 feet long, 15 feet in diameter and weighting about 14 tons. The lab was supposed to be delivered to the station 6 years ago, in 2002 to commemorate the anniversary of the sailing of Christopher Columbus, but because the problems with launching the space station's service module and the explosion of the shuttle Columbia in 2003 it was postponed. Even after six years, Columbus' installation was not without any problem. NASA had to delay it †by a day because of the last-minute switch in crew, caused by German astronaut Hans Schlegel illness. French astronaut Leopold Eyharts said recently, that they hope to that this first participation will help in reinforcing their technical expertise and out experience of operations to be able to go further and participate with the future of space exploration. With Columbus, the International Space Station has now 8 rooms and will be expanded by another one, Japan's new lab named Kibo, which will be installed in March.

To origins
by Claudia Sonea

Human history is still a mystery. Nevertheless paleontologists are not giving up and they continue to dig in the past in order to find as much information as possible. Until now the only thing that they have from the Neanderthals is a 40,000-year-old tooth found in southern Greece that they continue to analyze searching for clues and proves of what once was. The latest discovery that was made public on Friday is that the paleontologists might have been wrong when it comes to the mobility the Neanderthals had. That is because despite the fact that the tooth was found in Greece the analysis show the ancient human had spent at least part of its life away from that area. Paleoanthropologist Katerina Harvati at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, says that the supposition made by some experts that Neanderthals moved in limited areas, is rather doubtful and that in fact they must have been more mobile, particularly when hunting. All suppositions made until now are based on indirect evidence, including stone used in tools, while the tooth is a Neanderthal fossil itself and that is why is so important. The entire research made by the Max Planck Institute team was published in the Journal of Archaeological Science and trace the tooth history like the place were it was found: in a seaside excavation in Greece's southern Peloponnese region in 2002. Also it says that the tooth enamel was analyzed for ratios of a strontium isotope, a naturally occurring metal found in food and wate because levels of the metal vary by area. Eleni Panagopoulou of the Paleoanthropology-Speleology Department of Southern Greece, concluded that the level of strontium proves the Neanderthal grew up at least 12.5 miles away from where it was discovered. Still some less trustful in the research like Clive Finlayson, an expert on Neanderthals and director of the Gibraltar Museum, disagree and say that it is not out of ordinary for a Neanderthal to move at least 20 km in a life time, because it is in human nature to explore and move from frequently. Now the question that remains is not if the research is accurate or not, but if it changes with much our knowledge about humanity history, about its evolution and development. When it will be something more on that subject the interest will surely grow. I think that in six years since its discovery, they could have done much more. Stay connected, they most definitely come up with something more relevant.

Chris Cantell Discusses Science: Killing the Earth
by Zuzana Valkova

Can you imagine that in 1000 years there won't be any life on Earth? It will be dead, dirty planet. Or that in 50 years there won't be any rain forest, any big producer of oxygen? Or there won't be any ice in the Arctic. All these things can happen. It's up to us. To be honest, I think all of this can be, and it is, our fault. All the global warming is caused by us. Of course there are some opponents of this theory. Some of them think that global warming is a natural process, and need no explanation, or others think that this era is just the end of the last ice age, so it's natural that Earth is getting warmer. But when you think about these theories, are those people normal? We can see that, for example the ice in the polar areas is melting; we can see how the animals over there are loosing their natural world. We can see how the climate in some countries is changing rapidly, they have floods, or they are without any rain. We can see how dirty everything is, you even have to be careful what water do you drink, everyday is a new factory build, you can see it. People are leaking the dirt to the oceans and air or dig it into the ground. So then don't be surprised when some huge disaster will come and kill us. We still have time to do something about this. Some things on this planet we have already destroyed, but there are still lots of things we have to save. Only thing we have to do is to join. And together we can do almost everything.

Dinosaur fossil found in China
by Zuzana Krskova

Researches led by Xiaolin Wang of the Chinese Academy of Science found a small pterodactyl. It's reported in this week's online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences."We have this really amazing creature, sparrow sized, which lived essentially in the trees, showing us a very new, very interesting side of the evolutionary history of those animals.' Said Alexander W. A. Kellner of the National Museum of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, BrazilPterodactyls are usually known for people from a giant examples of those flying reptiles. They have also been mostly uncovered in coastal areas. This new fossil- Dubbed Nemicolopterus crypticus ( Hidden flying dweller)- was found in the western part of China's Liaoning province, a region forested about 120 million years ago. This pterosaurs lived most of the time in trees. It has a curved toes, and it was so small, that researchers thought, it was a baby, when they first uncovered it."Because they were flying animals, their fossils are extremely rare. So, discoveries such as this are fundamental to understand the evolution of these winged vertebrates," Kellner said. The legs of this pterodactyl had attachments for muscles indicating that it has been able to grasp limbs. Also unlike most pterodactyls, it lacked teeth. Speculators supposed, that it might have eaten insects. There have been also found smaller specimens, but clearly younger than this animal."It is interesting to see some clear arboreal adaptations in this species," said Matthew Carrano, a paleontologist at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History and added, "It confirms a suspicion we had, that pterosaurs were more diverse in their habitats than we knew from the record."Even if this animal would double its size by growing, it would be still the smallest of its particular group.

Astronaut missed the spacewalk
by Zuzana Zelenakova

Hans Schlegel, aged 56 is astronaut of German origin and currently a member of the crew on space shuttle Atlantis. The mission's main objective is to bring up $2 billion European Space Agency's science laboratory called Columbus, connect it to the International Space Station and activate it. A control center is being built in Europe to follow the ISS and most of all Columbus. By having lab module on orbit Europe becomes an important partner in international spaceflight community. Schlegel did not take part in the first spacewalk because of his illness, which he refused to specify, because "medical issues are private." "I did my very best inside," said the Mission Specialist 3. "But I do not deny that personally, for me, that was a little bit bitter. But it was the better choice to have the other crew member go out, and once that decision was made, I fully supported as much as I could." When it comes to the next spacewalk on Wednesday, February 13 there are no changes announced from NASA and European Space Agency officials. Schlegel is to go outside together with Rex Walheim who participated on Monday outing, and to adapt new nitrogen tank to the space station. The astronauts spent Tuesday by opening up and installing Columbus. "I have to say that the crew is like a bunch of kids with a new toy box," said flight director Bob Dempsey. Although there were some initial problems NASA stated that it is only natural with a new hardware. Atlantis will leave the ISS no sooner than Sunday.

Napoleon did not die of poisoning
by Zuzana Zelenakova

Napoleon was a small man, but certainly a great personality in the course of history. He held many titles, Emperor of the French and King of Italy among others. He won many victories before failing in Russia in 1812, which subsequently led to his imprisonment at Elba. After his final revolt at Waterloo he was exiled by British to the island of Saint Helena where he died in 1821. The cause of Napoleon's death has been discussed many times. Official report said he died of stomach cancer like his father, but arsenic poisoning theory has became increasingly popular in recent decades. According to this theory Napoleon was poisoned by British to prevent his possible return to power. However, Italian scientists proved that conclusion as wrong. They studied Napoleon's hair samples from different periods of his life and found out that the hair did contain high level of arsenic, but already in a very young age. Also the hair of his wife, son and other contemporaries contained the poisonous chemical element. The reason for that can be found in glues and dyes commonly used by people of the period. "The environment in which people lived in the early 1800s evidently caused the intake of quantities of arsenic that today we would consider dangerous," the scientists said. So in the case of Napoleon's death it was not the matter of poisoning but of constant contamination by arsenic throughout his whole life. There is no indication of increased level of the poison in his last years.

Columbus module
by Sandra Stoklaskova

A couple of weeks ago, we have found out, that astronauts would like to visit space as soon, as problems with shaking of Space shuttle will be solved. Today we have good news concerning this kind of business, too.European's technicians achieved a success with installing new Columbus laboratory module on Tuesday. This day also two European astronauts nipped in the module, which was designed to be part of International Space Station. It was constructed in more European towns and states including Turin, Rome, Germany. Then it was sent in Kennedy Space Center in Florida.Creating the biggest single contribution to the ISS is considered to be a huge success of their authors from European Space Agency. It is 7 meter long and includes biolab, fluid science laboratory and other parts which were made for possibility to make physics, medical and pharmaceutical experiments."We are very proud. It starts a new era. The European scientific module Columbus and the ISS are connected for a many, many years of research in space cooperation, internationally," said Hans Schlegel, German astronaut.Europe had to wait for more than 5 years for Columbus module to reach orbit, because of problems in Russia and United States, which were mainly based on finance situation in Russia. But now, the module finally reached the orbit, and also a second space walk is planned.Europe believes that its orbital outpost will bring only positives in a form of researches, thanks to which they could benefit in more industries.

Modified humans
by Claudia Sonea

If technology makes me squeak of wonder and amazement, medical science makes me shriek in fear. How would you react at the news that human embryos containing DNA from two women and a man was created by some British scientists who arguments their actions with the purpose of one day to be able to produce embryos free of inherited diseases. It is not for no reason that the preliminary research raised concerns about the possibility of genetically modified babies. Still, scientists say that the embryos are only primarily the product of one man and one woman and according to Patrick Chinnery, a professor of neurogenetics at Newcastle University involved in the research, their goal is not to alter genes, but to fix the flaws causing diseases. The research, supported financially by The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, a British charity, was not presented in any Journal yet, but it was released at a conference recently. Taking a look inside the process, they say that the gene that they want to replace is the mitochondria, a cell's energy source, which is contained in a normal female egg and whose mistakes in the genetic code can result in serious diseases like muscular dystrophy, epilepsy, strokes and mental retardation. Chinnery and colleagues used normal embryo created from one man and one woman that had defective mitochondria in the woman's egg and transplanted it into an emptied egg donated from a second woman who had healthy mitochondria. This process does not involve tempering with what is inside the nucleus and makes us what we are, they say. Until now 10 such embryos have been created, but they have not been allowed to develop for more than five days. Chinnery hopes that after further experiments in the next few years the process might be available to parents undergoing in-vitro fertilization and who might deal with unexpected diseases. Francoise Shenfield, a fertility expert with the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, and who was not connected to the Newcastle University research is totally supporting Chinnery and in Japan similar experiments have been conducted and has already led to the birth of healthy mice who had their mitochondria genes corrected. However, further tests must be made in order to be completely sure about the process. If it will have benefic results, proving that it really works a bill to allow the procedure to be regulated as a therapy for couples is expected to be discussed in Britain's House of Commons in March.

Chris Cantell Discusses Science: Columbus On a Way To The ISS.
by Milota Sidorova

After two months delay, the space shuttle Atlantis launches Thursday, carrying European Space Agency ' s Laboratory called Columbus to the International Space Station.More than $1.6 billion Columbus, the result of two decade' s work of more than 300 European scientists will integrate as a new long-term project on the station, running on the American projects and Russian Mir 2. Atlantis will take off from Cape Canaveral on Thursday, despite of bad weather forecast, offering just 40 percents for appropriate weather conditions. "We're all thinking that Thursday's the day regardless of what the weather guy might tell you," Doug Lyons, the launch director said. According the initial plan, December take off was canceled by problems with erratic fuel gauges in the shuttle's external tank. A new problem with a bent hose appeared last week. After a reconstruction, Atlantis is prepared to launch, even with a suspicion that the breaks can appear at the end of the flight. Engineers believe, that the astronauts will be able to solve that situation by that time. Daniele Laurini, the European Space Agency's liaison with the Johnson Space Center in Houston declared that, they all had been through difficult times, but they had overcome them together. Two European astronauts will fly with Atlantis five-member crew to help fix Columbus on ISS. One of them will remain to conduct further experiments. The Lab focuses on engineering and science research, but in the opinion of Joanne Gabrynowicz, director of the National Center for Remote Sensing, Air, and Space Law at the University of Mississippi, the presence of Columbus on ISS represent a test bed for law and policy. The ISS is an experiment of international space partnerships. Just few weeks after Columbus reaches the station, Kibo, the Japanese Experiment Module is planned to attach the international board. The projected completion date is 2010, with the station remaining in operation until around 2016.

NASA is preparing to new mega project
by Ivana Bruderova

President Bush and U.S. administration made an important decision which can help significantly to solve a problem of global warming. After years of cutting budgets for NASA (30% since 2000) President now promised more than $1 billion to construct and shoot new satellites. Six satellites will made by NASA and cost $910 million over the next five years. They will orbit the Earth and report potential changes. The 2009 budget brings more finance also to national Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and it's instruments to monitor weather changes several of whose are damaged and there were no money to repair it.The priority is now for NASA two satellites which should replace the old ones and make the Earth observation more effective. The old satellites observed ice shrinking while the new will be focused on the critical soil moisture. The rest four satellites are still being discussed by the scientist including which one should be built as the first. "This is the right time for Earth observations," said science adviser of White House Jack Marburger. "Everyone's concerned about climate changes."In spite of increase of grants, Richard Anthes, a past president of American Meteorological Society draw attention to fact this is still less money than scientist need and which they recommended over the next three years. The administration discussed about the energy emissions as the reason of climate changes, too. The new budget would cut spending on energy efficiency and renewable energy, but would increase spending on nuclear power plants and clean technologies for power plants.

Changing the Blue Planet for the Red one?
by Martina Harvanova

It seems like in the future our Earth won't be enough for the world's population. Countries such as India, China or Japan with the biggest density and still growing population rate probably won't be able to balance the number of its inhabitants and the given space and resources for them. Mainly that is a reason for thoughts about discovering and finding another possible place for humans. The most thinkable solution viewed by the scientists is considered to be a life on Mars, a planet where humans could be able to survive. The fourth planet from the Sun in the Solar System appears to common viewers as a ball of yellow, orange or reddish color. Mars disposes of two moons, Phobos and Deimos and its apparent magnitude reaches -2.9, a brightness surpassed only by Venus, the Moon and the Sun, though most of the time Jupiter will appear brighter to the naked eye than Mars. The rumor that on the Mars there might be liquid water is based on various observations which assume that the light and dark patches seen in periodic variations look like seas and continents. Moreover, the straight line features reminded the scientists of channels for watter, but in spite of the fact they were proven not to exist as they were explained as optical illusions. So how efficient are the researches and what are the latest news in the exploration of Mars? Evidence suggests that Mars was once significantly more habitable than it is today, but there is still no proof living organisms ever existed on the planet. The requirement for the Mars' habitability - the ability to develop and sustain life & is mainly that the orbit of it lie within a habitable zone. That means the water would not be in danger to freeze and this condition is currently fulfilled only by the Earth. The past flow of liquid water, however, demonstrates the planet's potential for habitability. The past flow of liquid water, however, demonstrates the planet's potential for habitability. The research about the possibility to find life on the Mars has recently moved forward as the specialists from the European Space Agency (ESA) have unveiled 3D pictures of the Mars to help understand and explore planet's unique topography. Thanks to the data from the Mars Express High Resolution Stereo Camera researchers will be able to obtain even more information about the Red Planet. Therefore the ESA claims:"Although ordinary images can give spectacular bird's-eye views, they can only convey part of the picture. They miss out on the topography, or the vertical elevation of the surroundings. That's where Mars Express comes in."Though the views are admirable and look really beautiful, I still have difficulties to imagine a real life on the Mars. Consequently, I hope the scientists won't rush with their researches. I don't plan to move out from the Earth.

International Space Station
by Zuzana Valkova

It's true that we are not alone. There's something else in the space. At least there are our astronauts who live on the International Space Station. This station was built to become the first common place for people, where they can study the space and earth and where they can discover new fields of science. This station is the only place where, usually two or three, astronauts live constantly. They are changing every six months if it's possible. The first crew enters the station in 2000. The station is on the low orbit of Earth in the height of 360 Km. The station is built from many modules. Some of them are American and Russian and right now they are going to connect one European and in the near future one Japanese module. I didn't know about the fact that there is also Russian space ship Soyuz connected to the station, in case there would be some danger. Big very visible parts of the ship are solar panels, which produce the electricity for the whole station. I was thinking about what the astronauts can do on the Station for six months? I know that they are also scientist and they have their missions. But six months is very long time. Can you imagine being in the space for so long, without your family and with limited contact with Earth? I'm sure they don't have internet or phone there, so they can call anybody anytime. I know that the feeling of being in the space is amazing, but I would think about it before going there.
